Iron Creek, Washington (Circa 2021-7)

Some paintings remind you to see, not just to look. This one, painted at Iron Creek in Washington State, was one of those lessons. I learned here the importance of painting what I see rather than what I know. That lesson came from my sister, who has always been a natural artist. Even as a child, she studied the world, how light bends, how colors shift in shadow, how depth and form reveal truth through observation. She taught me to slow down, to look beyond what my mind assumes, and to let my eyes do the teaching. She’s always been honest in her critiques, never harsh, always encouraging, and it’s her voice that has guided me through many early works. This painting, though simple, carries that moment of revelation when seeing became more powerful than knowing. It reminds me that growth often begins when we learn to see the world as it truly is, not as we imagine it to be.
